This is a good one. How do you solve this?

  1. SHIT. DAMN that’s a good one.

Well my bet’s on the nose not growing. He didn’t start off with a lie, after all – he had no idea whether or not his nose would grow. So it isn’t a lie (defined: a fib told for personal benefit), all he’s doing is making a mistaken statement.

    Sounds logical?

  2. hmmmmm… if it’s in a computer point of view.. now could be referring to the current time where it’s false therefore it will still grow after a short delay. lol..

  3. How would he know that his nose will grow in the first place when he’s told a lie? In the story, he doesn’t even know what’s happening to himself when his nose started growing right? Hahaha. Anyway, if he doesn’t know that his nose is “supposed” to grow, and he’s making a statement that his nose is going to grow “now” that means he’s nose IS really going to grow because at that point of time, he was just making it up to make himself sound like a unique and interesting wooden boy. Does that make sense. Haha.

  4. Pinocchio’s nose only grows when he tells a lie.
He said his nose would grow now which is a lie, because his nose was not going to grow then.
    But his sentence changed that.
So yeah. His nose grew after he told the lie about his nose not growing
    =)

Isn’t it enough to be considered a lie if you’re saying something will happen when you do not know for sure? (My understanding of lie: anything that isn’t the truth, irregardless of the intent)

    -Cincau
Well.. if you put it that way then it leaves very little room for imagination :P

    -Nadia
I suppose you’re questioning his intent, like what Eli mentioned. But irregardless of why he said that his nose will grow, he’s making a statement of something that he could not be sure (or in your case, never knew) could happen. Let’s think of it this way – if you told your friend that you *will* make it for a movie with him/her when you weren’t sure in the first place, would you consider that a lie? Sure, you might actually really make it for the movie, but that doesn’t change the fact that you were “lying” from the beginning. It just so happens that the outcome was in the favour of your statement.

“So yeah. His nose grew after he told the lie about his nose not growing”
If his nose actually grew, he wasn’t telling a lie in the first place. And the loop continues…..

  6. I think the keyword is in the use of the word “NOW”.

So the moment he says “his nose will grow NOW”. Nothing would happen for 2 secs as the magic charges up. Following which his statement is proven false, and the nose will grow.

Even though his nose grew, it still doesn’t prove that Pin is not lying, as it didn’t grow instantly aka “NOW”

  7. Like I said, if you nitpick on the word “now”, it leaves very little room for imagination ;)
