The Unthinkable

I hate Koreans.

Because I like them so much.

The unthinkable has happened. I am… hopelessly mildly addicted to Korean series/dramas. It started off as my mum’s hobby. She has been watching the continuous streams of Korean series on TV, something which I never do. I don’t even have a TV in KL. But this holiday resulted in something different. It is one long break, and I’m home for already almost a month. Coincidentally, there was this new Korean series – Sassy Girl Chun-Hyang – on TV when I came back. What began as a nothing-to-do-after-dinner-past-time turned into I-need-to-finish-my-dinner-quick addiction.

I’m actually mindlessly chasing after following the series.

Don’t. Say. A. Word.

I’m not going to embarrass myself by showing you all how much I know about the plot and characters, so I’ll pretend I know nothing about the show and deviously innocently direct you to its Wikipedia article.

At first, I thought it wasn’t all that bad. I know there’s still hope in me. I know I’m not hopelessly trapped in the deep dark wet Abyss of Korean Tearjerkersâ„¢. It’s just one Korean series, right? Wrong. It was all good until today, when I unintentionally, unwittingly, unconsciously took a pair of discs from my mum’s collection and started watching. It’s not me. I don’t do that. I don’t even do that with English movies.

I picked Baekmanjangja-ui cheot-sarang – A Millionaire’s First Love. It happened to be a tulen copy, with a nice cover and a shiny hologram sticker. My mum bought it a while ago, but she hasn’t watched it yet. Doh. I have to admit, this movie is the Mother-of-all-Korean-Tearjerkersâ„¢. I just don’t know how they managed to inject so much emotion into it until I forgot they are nothing more than a bunch of actors and actresses acting according to script.

Not. A. Word.

The movie is absolutely saddening. It started off slightly humourous, but towards the second half of it, chemistry began to build between the two main characters. Things turned really depressing when the girl is going to DIE and due to her uncommon health condition, their relationship was very restricted. This one like that one cannot show, that one like this one also cannot show. Haiya, you know lah. Nothing has brought me so close to tears before. This almost did. ALMOST. It’s a lovely movie. I hate to admit it. But I love it.

This. Good movie. Watch. Bye.

  3. It ain’t that bad lar… I don’t get it, why so many ppl(especially guys) out there thinks it’s shameful to watch korean drama? I personally think that korean drama are very meaningful (except the crying parts)

Korean dramas do teach us alot about relationships.. ;) and it’s nothing to be ashame of watching it!

  4. I think Korean drama is so popular quite possibly because they portray ‘perfect relationships’ – perfect life, perfect situation, and most of all perfect love.

Something that most normal people could not obtain, that’s why they’re hooked to watching it.

I personally think it’s a very lovely thing, but for quite the same reason. It’s so lovely because it’s so perfect, but at the same time so unreal.

p/s: Most significant parts of Korean drama are crying parts :P

  12. >.< It’s not always I can write like this. Maybe it’s just luck. Hahaha..

I don’t usually watch korean drama… so this makes it the first full series I’ve watched so far.

And I don’t plan to get addicted to any other :P

  13. I still think Hotieler is one of the best and most original lar. Your mum also got good taste. Once you’ve watched a few Korean dramas you’ve more or less watched them all…Especially the seasons series.

Autumn in my heart. Winter Sonata. Summer Scent and Spring Love…(Spring something)…Autumn in my heart was the besttttt!
